Memorial locomotive steams into NC By ROBYN BRISTOW Steam train enthusiasts will be able to get up close and personal with the Passchendaele train a memorial to railway men who served and fell in World War 1 as it steams through the Weka Pass. Locomotive AB608 engine, which is owned by the NZ and Railway Locomotive Society and restored by Steam Incorporated, Paekakariki, will be operating on the Weka Pass Railway line with public rides available on Saturday, November 7, at 10am and 1pm. There will be a brief ceremony at the Glenmark Station at 9.30am before the public get to enjoy steaming through the pass or viewing the locomotive in action. The Weka Pass Railway Society members will be on hand to help out AB608 which will be doubleheaded with A428 as they steam through the pass to Waikari and return. AB608 was built in Christchurch at the Addington Workshop in 1915. During the war the AB class was the standard locomotive used on mainline passenger and freight trains throughout the country. It was named Passchendaele in 1925, after the Minister of Railway Gordon Coates, agreed to name a steam locomotive in memory of those members of the New Zealand Railways who fell in WW1. More than 5000 railwaymen served overseas between 1914 and 1918 out of a total work force of 14,000. A total of 447 died fighting

Passchendaele was chosen in 1927 to haul the Duke and Duchess of York’s royal train in the South Island a role it has also performed unnamed, during the Prince of Wales tour in 1920. But it spent the bulk of its working years based at Dunedin, working over the main lines to north and south, the Otago Central line and the many branches throughout Otago and Southland. In 1943 the brakes were applied for good as it was felt it was no longer possible to keep it in the condition of cleanliness expressed on
plaques on the locomotive. The plates were removed and later put on display at the Christchurch and Dunedin railway stations. It looked destined for the scrap heap, sitting idle for years before being rescued in 1993 by Steam Incorporated, along with the plates, who restored it to operating duty at a cost of more than $500,000. It began plying the lines again on excursion service from July 2014. The public can ride on these trains by booking and buying special tickets on the Weka Pass Railway website (www.wekapassrailway.co.nz).

Coffee roasted and blended in North Canterbury has won a medal on the national stage. Andrew Weir, roaster and coowner of Ris’tretto Espresso, who plays his trade from a barn at Waikuku Beach, has won silver with his traditional flat white coffee at the 2015 Huhtamaki New Zealand Coffee Awards. He and his wife Cath are ‘‘thrilled’’ to be recognised at the national awards, which are in their 12th year, for the fourth time. Over two days the judging panel, headed by one of the world’s leading coffee authorities Instaurator, tasted nearly 300 coffees entered by roasting companies from all over New Zealand. This year’s silver follows Ris’tretto Espresso’s silver award for best flat white in 2013, bronze award for best organic coffee in 2012 and a silver award for best NZ espresso at the 2011 event. ‘‘As a boutique coffee roaster it’s great to see that if you are passionate about creating great coffee, you can be recognised on the national stage,’’ says Andrew. The couple moved to a lifestyle block at the beach resort just over two years ago after their Brooklands home was red zoned following the Canterbury earthquakes. Andrew and Cath owned Ris’tretto Espresso in Barbadoes Street, but sold the cafe ´ to Madeline De Jong, who has the licence to operate under the Ris’tretto Espresso brand with a supply agreement. ‘‘It was a seven day business and I was trying to wholesale the coffee at the same time. ‘‘So we moved the roastery here and
basically decided to dedicate my time to serving wholesale clients,’’ says Andrew. ‘‘It is fantastic. I roast from here and supply clients in the city, delivering and providing training and support to staff,’’ There is also clients outside of Christchurch but the business is confined to Canterbury. ‘‘I like to concentrate on Canterbury because I am able to get to them and see each client personally. ‘‘It is about being a partner with our clients who I see each week, see how they are going and try to support them as much as I can,’’ said Andrew. He loves his job and says coffee roasting is something that ‘‘grew over time’’. ‘‘I spent a few years overseas where I worked and travelled. When I came back to New Zealand I started my love affair with coffee. I enjoyed drinking it here and the the cafe scene,’’ he says. Cath and Andrew opened their first cafe Bagel Heaven in New Regent Street in 2002, selling it about three years later. Andrew worked fulltime off site while Cath ran the business. It was here Andrew’s focus was drawn more and more to roasting and finding the perfect blend of coffees with different traits, from growing regions around the world. His passion led to him buying a roaster in 2007 and experimenting and researching until he finally came up with the ‘‘nutty, malty, caramelly smooth flavour’’ he was looking for and one that ‘‘packed a punch with a nice sweetness and not too acidy’’. The couple opened the Ris’tretto Espresso in Barbadoes Street and became established as a boutique coffee roaster in 2008.

Future in doubt A Christmas party in Amberley for the town’s seniors is in danger of being canned. The Amberley Lions Club Senior Citizens Christmas Party has been running for more than 30 years, but the turn out in recent years has the club worried the tradition might be coming to an end. Lions spokesperson Len Smith is urging people wanting to attend this year’s December 12 function to keep an eye out for a notice in The News and the local Hotline in the next few weeks asking people to register for the event. This gives the club an indication of numbers attending for catering. The notice can be dropped into Neville at Arthur Burkes or emailed to lgbas@xnet.co.nz. A range of entertainment has been lined up including country singer, Smokey Marshall, Kenneth Love, the Rangiora Brass Band, Line Dancers and items from a selection of other entertainers. and experience, visit the district once a month to talk to immigrants and help them with their visa and employment issues. ‘‘I can give moral support but I don’t have the legal side,’’ says Mrs Davie Martin. She believes agencies have taken a lot of money from Filipinos keen to come to New Zealand. ‘‘They would have had to pay the money back before they started earning for themselves and to bring their families over for a better life. ‘‘They give up so much and go through a lot to get here. They leave their families for a long time before they can afford to bring them over.’’ Mrs DavieMartin hopes a sensible and practical solution could be found soon for everyone concerned, including farmers. ‘‘Everyone is supporting each other. A heck of a lot (Filipinos) are not affected but are still very concerned and supporting their friends and families,’’ says Mrs DavieMartin. Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse has said he was working with officials on new visa criteria to ensure those already here, and ‘‘unknowingly caught up in the alleged scam’’, were not unduly punished. This could enable affected workers to be issued temporary visas while their situation is considered.

An advocate for Filipino dairy farm workers in the Amuri area of North Canterbury, is hoping for some form of ‘‘amnesty’’ for workers caught up in a visa scam. Sharon DavieMartin says around 80 Filipinos are employed on dairy farms in the Amuri area and she believed a few maybe caught up in the scam where work experience details have been ‘‘pumped up’’ on visa applications by immigration agencies. Mrs DavieMartin believes many workers have been ‘‘hoodwinked’’ by the agencies who had exaggerated the experience of applicants for ‘‘money’’ and she now wants to ensure that these workers are not sent home or punished. ‘‘We can not say it is all right and just ignore it as it would set a precedent. ‘‘But if we can come up with some way of helping, such as an amnesty while applications are sorted out, it would be a huge help,’’ she says. Mrs DavieMartin says workers are too scared to go to Immigration New Zealand for help and expose themselves. She has had discussions with an Immigration official while meeting about looking after immigrants in the area. The local Rural Women’s group is also lending a helping hand in looking after new immigrants to the area as it is
difficult to find dairy farm workers, she says. If workers were not allowed to continue on farms or allowed to take up employment it would have a ‘‘huge impact’’ on the dairy farming community in the area. ‘‘It is a real worry. ‘‘People must be really concerned,’’ says Mrs DavieMartin.

There’s a lot of work to do before we can get over 1000. We’ve got to cut our costs accordingly and the logistics don’t bare thinking about.

Kaikoura is gearing up for a busy cruise ship season, with five visits already confirmed. All five cruise ship visits are scheduled for January, four of those by Australian cruise ship Coral Discoverer which is due to arrive on January 2. Coral Discoverer, which is set to make return visits on January 14, 18 and 30, carries up to 72 passengers and 20 crew. Another cruise ship, Silver Discoverer, is also scheduled to visit on January 18 and carries up to 120 passengers and 96 crew. Destination Kaikoura general manager Glenn Ormsby says the town is continuing to explore options to address the issue of rocks in the South Bay in a bid to attract cruise ships with 700 or more passengers. ‘‘We are working with Environment Canterbury and the harbour master, so we can increase the number of cruise ships arriving here and attract bigger cruise ships. ‘‘If we can attract more and bigger cruise ships there will be benefits for our neighbours as well.’’ So far the largest cruise ship to visit Kaikoura is the Seabourn Odyssey, which has up to 450 passengers and 330 crew.

The building of a new BMX track in Amberley could be under way before Christmas. But the Hurunui BMX Club, which aims to build a quality entry level BMX competition track for young people, is calling on businesses in the district to lend a hand to ‘‘help us get over the finish line’’. The club has secured land beside Lawcocks Road which was a transport depot, many local contractors have already come on board and committed to help build the track and over $150,000 has been fundraised. To secure this funding business sponsorship is needed, says a spokesperson. All corporate sponsorship will include regular exposure via the club’s Facebook page, a thank you advertisement to sponsors, a sponsors logo on the opening event flyers and a 20 percent discount at Motivation Design and MK Graphic Solutions. There are three sponsorship packages: Fence signage, for a minimum of six months $500 to $750; Track corner sponsorship $250 annually and Track starting hill, $500 annually. The club says in return for helping build a permanent facility, which will be accessible all year round, the club will educate a generation of BMX enthusiasts with the long term goal of hosting BMX racing events. ‘‘Help us grow an even healthier, active and vibrant community. ‘‘We want youth to have a strong presence in our community and be given the opportunity to connect and participate in a challenging world class sport,’ the club says. There is two options for placement on the road frontage on to Lawcocks Road or on site entrance. The fence will remain up during the entire construction process. The track corner option gives people naming rights to one of the three corners of the track for 12 months, a logo on the annual sponsor board and an opportunity to supply and install signage up to 1200mm by 1800mm on the track corner. Sponsoring the Track start hill means companies will have naming rights to the Start Hill of the track, the most prominent position raised 2.5m about ground height. Young talent in the spotlight at Centre Stage By DAVID HILL The cream of the Waimakariri district’s young talent took centre stage on Friday. Having no talent and being tone deaf myself, I enlisted my teenage daughter to provide an ‘‘expert’’ opinion on the 20 contestants at the Centre Stage 2 Teen Talent Contest held at the Rangiora Town Hall. The evening opened with last year’s winner Natasha Boon reappearing with some impressive jazz dance moves. Last year’s runnerup Caleb Lawson then strummed on his guitar and sang his own original song ‘‘Loose Change’’. Solo drummer Jackson Roche performed blindfolded and set the show off with a bang, setting off a strong mix of singers, musicians and dancers. My daughter’s favourites were the dancers, however it was 17yearold Linda Nherera who stole the show with her own original song ‘‘Diary of Broken Heart’’. Linda said she was ‘‘speechless’’ after her win was announced. She wrote the song about a year ago, while going through a difficult time in her life and never dreamed it would one day win her a talent contest. ‘‘I chose that song because it’s a part of me and I’m emotionally connected to it. ‘‘No, I had no idea I was going to win I just thought I would get third place or something.’’ Secondplaced Jaydin Shingleton was thrilled to get second after singing and strumming on guitar a Jason Mraz song ‘‘I Won’t Give Up’’. While 13year old Mele Peseta claimed third after playing her ukulele and singing a medley in what was her first time on stage. With the singers taking the top three places, the dancers were left to claim the spot prizes, with 13yearold Henry from Rangiora High School impressing the judges with his Michael Jackson dance

Courtney Pearce was recognised for her contemporary dance solo, while two dance crews from Zion Studios were recognised for their talent despite only performing together for less than two terms. Another singer Taylor Roche (17) claimed a commendation prize, sponsored by Rangiora Town Hall, after singing ‘‘Feeling Good’’. The number of 13yearolds performing against 17yearolds prompted one of the judges to suggest a separate talent contest for younger teens is needed. The evening finished with performances from Avonside Girls High School student Satori, 11yearold dancer Imke and Kaiapoi High School’s senior dancers.

Counting your small blessings important
Delays ‘frustrating’ Contractors are hard at work on the new Civic Centre roof areas that required reinstating after the failure of the insulation panels. Scaffolding should be coming down soon and the craypot structure and access ramps will be put up. The electricians are on site completing their works. I appreciate the community concerns regarding this issue and the delays to the completion of the build. This is frustrating council also. However these issues are in the hands of our management and insurers and we need to follow due process. We are working through this as best as we can and look forward to a positive outcome with a great Museum and modern Library and Civic Centre building that will serve us for many years to come. I have recently returned from an overseas trip with my wife Mary. We visited Kent in England then travelled to France and spent time in Bayeux France, the area where the Allied forces landed in 1944. From there we travelled on to Budapest and took a river cruise back to Amsterdam, then on to Constance in Germany where we did a cycle trip before visiting friends in Switzerland and on home to Kaikoura from there. While we have had no contact from our insurance company (no surprise given our experience over the last five years) or the builders, one suspects, given the asbestos removal and the road works, that the foundations on the new house will not be laid until sometime next year. Still, we should not have expected anything different as our neighbours’ rebuilds have all faced similar delays. The builder’s project manager’s prediction of 31 weeks (seven months) did seem rather optimistic. In recent weeks I was also asked to write a press release for the church we attend in New Brighton, as a public meeting was called to discuss new council regulations which could make the church’s redevelopment plans (to replace the church building demolished in 2011) impossible. Five years on, ‘‘postquake’’ life if postquake is even the right word doesn’t get any less complicated. Oh well, thank goodness for the small blessings in life.

trip to Europe is that the visitor industry is massive. Wherever we were, there were large numbers of tourists and it was the shoulder season. France is the most visited country in the world with 80 million visitors a year. The other lasting impression that was a surprise was the well kept state of cities and towns we visited. A real effort appears to go into keeping the country side tidy and well groomed. Meeting and talking with people over there about New Zealand is interesting. We are seen as possibly the most beautiful place in the world and friendly, on the other hand we are also seen to be a long way from anywhere else in the world. The importance of access to WiFi becomes apparent when you travel to other countries; having free WiFi in our towns is vital going forward, if we want to attract tourists. They love to be connected and use social media as they travel and spend throughout our country. While we were away I was saddened to hear that Sally Kennedy had passed away. Sally has given so much volunteer time to this community, and worked for years keeping the Memorial gardens and other areas of Kaikoura in good shape without any fanfare. Often she would be working at day break raking leaves and tending the gardens prior to everyone getting out of bed.
Sometimes in life you count your small blessings. Whether that be creating a silly decorated hat for the men’s art class at the Northern (Rangiora) Agricultural and Pastoral Show, attending the Centre Stage Teen Talent Contest with my teenage daughter or celebrating my teenage daughter’s birthday with family over Labour Weekend small blessings are what counts in life. Not the things you cannot control. Just a few weeks ago my family was fuelled by optimism, moving into a rental house and hopeful work would soon begin on rebuilding our Parklands, Christchurch, home. Hopeful our new home would be ready by winter next year. However, last week a notice came in the letterbox from the Christchurch City Council advising sections of the street will be closed over the next six weeks from this week for road works the section of the street which includes our house will be closed for four of those six weeks. Then over the weekend and I drove past our home and saw a new sign on the fence ‘‘Danger: Asbestos Removal’’.

Craft fair popular By SHELLEY TOPP The North Canterbury Soroptimists could not have wished for a better day to hold their annual craft fair and market day last week. The popular fundraiser was held at the Rangiora A and P Showgrounds on Tuesday, October 20, in warm, sunny, still weather. With the sun out and the temperature in the mid20s the gelato stall did a roaring trade. However, there were many other stalls to choose from 89 altogether selling everything from lavender, tomato plants, woodwork, glassware, clothing, flowers, and honey, to tangelos, grapefruit and avocados, Christmas cards, toys and much more. ‘‘We were very happy with the day as the weather was so perfect, ’’ soroptimist Mary Harris, one of the organisers, said. ‘‘We had some great new stalls which helps to keep the market day fresh.’’ ‘‘Lois Bennett and Wendy McClung had the mammoth task of organising the stalls and did an amazing job.’’ Rangiora buskers Phil Minton and Claire Buckley added to the relaxed country atmosphere with their music during the day. Attendance was also up. ‘‘There was a pleasing increase in visitors to the fair this year, with good numbers from Christchurch, ’’ Mary said. There were visitors from Auckland, Nelson and Rotorua too, and the fair also attracted international visitors this year, from Scotland, Australia, England, and Germany. Mary attributed the increase in
visitors to funding from Enterprise North Canterbury, which meant they were able to advertise the event outside Waimakariri. This year the Canterbury branch of the Cystic Fibrosis Association of New Zealand will benefit from funds raised on the day. ‘‘They will be our major recipient, along with other local charities,’’ Mary said. The chief executive officer of Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand, Belinda Burnett, said they were humbled this year to be chosen as funding recipient from the event. ‘‘There is such a lot we will be able to do with this money,’’ she said. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a condition that occurs when a faulty cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene is inherited from both parents. The condition is the most common life threatening genetic disorder affecting New Zealand children, the Cystic Fibrosis NZ website said. It affects a number of organs in the body (especially the lungs and pancreas) by clogging them with thick, sticky mucus. In the lungs this could cause shortness of breath, a chronic cough and repeated chest infections. Blockages affecting the pancreas could cause digestion problems leading to poor weight gain and malnutrition due to malabsorption,’’ the website said. However, the website also said that if a family history of cystric fibrosis was known, or suspected, family members could contact their GP to undergo a simple test to find out if they were carriers of the faulty gene.

A new summer lunch and dinner menu to titillate the taste buds is soon to be served up at a small North Canterbury country pub. The Old Leithfield Hotel is open for meals seven days a week and offers a great dining experience in a tranquil setting. Septic tank agreement By SHELLEY TOPP The Waimakariri District Council has approved a capital budget of $270,000 to repair private septic tank faults in Mandeville’s eastern district sewer scheme. The council decided on the repair work, after ‘‘a failure in the wastewater network’’ during flooding in June last year that left many properties without shower or toilet facilities for up to a fortnight. ‘‘Council decided this level of service was unacceptable, even in that extreme event, which was a 1in70year storm, coupled with the highest ever recorded groundwater level, and an already saturated catchment,’’ the council wastewater asset manager, Ric Barber, said. There were 14 separate faults recorded. Most were caused by access lids not being a sufficient height above finished ground level. ‘‘Council do play some part in ensuring that the septic tanks installed at properties are to our standards, when the building inspections are carried out, therefore it was felt that the community and the wastewater scheme would most benefit from a council initiative to repair the septic tanks at highest risk of inundating the wastewater network in a flood event,’’ he said. The large variety of faults encountered made it impossible to determine the cause of each fault. ‘‘Some are due to poor installation, some are due to wear and tear and age of the private infrastructure, some are due to the council updating their standards on what is required for a septic tank connected to a council scheme, and some are due to landscaping at the property, he said. ‘‘For older properties, the standards were not as implicit in their detail about what was required, and they did have to comply to the standard at the time. For newer properties, the council has
improved their internal processes to ensure that the septic tanks at properties are inspected to ensure compliance with the latest standards at the time of Building Code compliance,’’ he said. The Mandeville scheme’s septic tanks vary in age from new, in some cases, on the Mandeville Park and Millfield subdivisions, through to 1996 installation. ‘‘Property owners should bear in mind that a septic tank has an expected useful life of about 15 years,’’ Mr Barber said. Therefore, a number of the older properties may need to budget for replacement of their septic tank, or as a minimum an inspection of the integrity of the tank.’’ The eastern district sewer scheme is an amalgamation of nine discrete wastewater schemes into one large scheme. ‘‘It was amalgamated in 2007, when the Ocean Outfall was installed, and connects all the wastewater schemes in the eastern side of the Waimakariri District. All wastewater for these nine schemes (which comprise of Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Pegasus, Woodend, Woodend Beach, Waikuku Beach, Pines and Kairaki Beach, Tuahiwi, and Mandeville) is pumped to either Kaiapoi or Woodend wastewater treatment plants, from where it is pumped out to the Ocean Outfall after full treatment and testing. Mandeville was connected on to the eastern district sewer scheme in 2013, as it was previously three discreet schemes of Mandeville, Ohoka Meadows and Swannanoa,’’ Mr Barber said. Some of the Mandeville property owners had already had the repair work done privately. Mr Barber said this was because some wanted to be proactive and ensure all problems with their septic tanks were repaired, while others had the work done to ensure the sale of their property was not compromised. The councilowned Tuahiwi and Fernside schemes also had potential to be affected in floods and were being assessed.

suddenly Kiwis were offered some competition in the SUV market. Another favourite light pick up in New Zealand, was the Mazda B series of utes. These also started to be made in 1961. The size of the engine determined the name, so the B1600 had a 1.6 litre engine, the B2000 had a 2.0 litre engine and so on. Mazda called its compact pick ups "Proceed" in Japan, "Bounty" in New Zealand and "Drifter" in South Africa. When Ford partnered with Mazda, the same vehicles were called Ford Courier and later on Ranger. In New Zealand and Australia, the Ford Courier was built for Ford, by Mazda in Japan. In New Zealand, vehicles were assembled locally and most cities had

By AMANDA BOWES In the days before the market was flooded with RVs, SUVs, RTVs and cross overs, life, when it came to choosing a truck or ute, was relatively simple. Kiwis had their favourites. For the farmer, the big heavy trucks of the 1940s to 1960s were replaced by smaller more stream lined vehicles and the big trucks mainly became the domain of trucking firms. The Toyota Hilux became synonymous with icons like Barry Crump and the infamous ‘‘Bugger’’ advertisement on television. But its history goes back to 1961. Toyota had in fact been producing pick ups as far back as 1947, but the Hilux began life in a line of small pick ups named ‘‘Briska’’ in 1961 made by the Japanese commercial vehicle manufacturer, Hino Motors. In 1968 the first genuine Toyota Hilux hit the Japanese market. It was conceived by Toyota, but still built by Hino Motors. The first vehicles were short wheel base but by 1971, the long wheel base was introduced. The North American market was one of Toyota’s most important and the Hilux was simply called a Toyota Truck over there. By 1978, the third generation of Toyota Hilux had come about and New Zealand’s love affair with them began in earnest. Farmers, plumbers, electricians and builders all found favour with them as well as the Mazda B series which became popular in the early 1970s. In 1978, buyers could purchase a model that had Toyota embossed on the tail gate, which became a bit of a status symbol. The first four wheel drive Hilux came out in 1979 and in 1981 the first SUVs were produced. 1984 saw the development of the Surf and 4Runner in response to the Ford Bronco and Nissan Pathfinder and

Defending champion returning ‘‘Some excellent racing’’ is expected at the Kaikoura Races on Monday. With nominations due to close as The News went to print, Kaikoura Trotting Club president Bob Rochford said indications were a strong field of horses from the North Island and Australia is likely to lineup at the Kaikoura Racecourse on Monday, November 2. Last year’s Kaikoura Cup winner Arden Rooney is expected to return from his Australian base, as his connections prepare for a New Zealand Cup raid on Tuesday, November 10. Arden Rooney was trained by Canterbury trainer Mark Purdon last year, however his Australia owners took the New Zealand bred horse across the Tasman this year where he has won several major races.
Mr Rochford said he expected Mr Purdon, who has trained seven Kaikoura Cup winners, to return this year with another strong team of horses and last year’s New Zealand Cup winner Adore Me could be among them. Owners of at least two other Australian horses and several North Island horses have indicated through Trackside and other news media that they would target the Kaikoura Races ahead of the New Zealand Trotting Cup Meeting at Addington. The Kaikoura Trotting Club celebrated its 100th anniversary last year and Mr Rochford said up to 6000 visitors are expected to arrive in Kaikoura, with the bulk coming from Canterbury, including 35 bus loads of people from Christchurch. November 2 is also Marlborough Anniversary Day. ‘‘They mainly come from Canterbury and Marlborough, but we get a few North Islanders, and we’ve got some Australians who are coming over especially for it.

‘‘This race meeting is the second biggest trotting meeting in the country in terms of the amount of money placed as bets, behind the New Zealand Cup Day in Christchurch. ‘‘People see it on Trackside and realise it’s just beautiful. It’s probably the most scenic race track in the world.’’ Mr Rochford says he hopes to have enough horses in the ballot to be allocated across 10 races, as they ‘‘endeavour for every horse to get a start’’. The stake money is ‘‘on par with everybody else and is high for a country meeting’’, with $50,000 for the winner of the Kaikoura Cup and $25,000 for the ‘‘free for all trot’’ winner. Good prize money is also available in the maiden race, for horses yet to win a race, Mr Rochford said. Races range from a 1900 metre mobile start to a 2400 metre standing start, with several races handicapped by Harness Racing New Zealand. The Kaikoura Cup is not handicapped, but the horses may start in two lines depending on the number of starters. Mr Rochford says the club is appreciative of support from local business in Kaikoura and beyond. He is hoping for fine weather and an All Black Rugby World Cup win, with the final on Sunday morning New Zealand time, to ensure a successful day. ‘‘A big part of it will rely on the world cup. One other year when the All Blacks lost people had their lip down and didn’t punt as much. ‘‘I have no doubt the All Blacks will win and then everyone will be in a good frame of mind and they will want to have a go.’’ Visitors to the Kaikoura Races receive free entry and a free race book.

Extraordinary feats by troops in Gallipoli By DAVID HILL Malnourished New Zealand troops achieved some extraordinary feats at Gallipoli. Kaiapoi born historian Professor Glyn Harper says had the Anzacs been fed properly they might have achieved their objectives at Gallipoi. He was speaking to students from Kaiapoi, Rangiora and Oxford in the Kaiapoi High School Auditorium on Friday. In his talk ‘‘Bully Beef, Biscuits and Scurvy: the Gallipoli rations’’, Prof Harper said by the time of the August offensive, where the Wellington Battalion reached the summit of Chunuk Bair, the highest point on the Gallipoli Peninsula, the Anzacs were in poor health. ‘‘The Anzacs were given an impossible task. Scaling the heights of the Sari Bair ranges would have been challenging for fresh and fully fit soldiers, but they were exhausted and sick up to 85 percent were suffering from dysentery.’’ Prof Harper says the climate and the terrain and spending too long on the frontline were all factors which wore down the soldiers. But the biggest factor was the diet which consisted of daily rations on bully beef, army biscuits, black tea, jam and two quarts of water. There is also anecdotal evidence that many of the soldiers suffered from scurvy. He says the Argentine bully beef was of poor quality and ‘‘it went off very quickly in the heat’’. Questions were asked of the New Zealand Government of the day why Kiwi soldiers were not receiving New Zealand meat. The Defence Minister Mr Allen replied that he ‘‘didn’t know’’ as New Zealand simply supplied the British
Government. The Huntley and Palmers No 4 biscuit was ‘‘rock hard’’ and Prof Harper had some specially made for students to try. He says some were used as photo frames. A joint study between Otago and Massey University academics in 2013 concluded that the soldiers were seriously malnourished. ‘‘In 1915 people knew about calories, so they knew about how many calories soldiers needed to sustain them. ‘‘But vitamins and trace elements were not wellknown and it was the inadequate diets at Gallipoli which led to new knowledge.’’ Prof Harper grew up at The Pines, attending Kaiapoi North School and was a first day pupil at Kaiapoi High School in 1972. After two years at Kaiapoi High School, he transferred to Mairehau High School in Christchurch where Waimakariri Mayor David Ayers was a teacher. ‘‘When I left this school in 1973, I never thought I would be back and going by my last school report they probably didn’t expect me back either. ‘‘I can remember Mr Ayers he had long hair, so I thought he was pretty cool.’’ Kaiapoi RSA president Neill Price says Prof Harper, who went to school with Mr Price’s daughter, is a good example to today’s students of what they can achieve if they put their minds to it. Prof Harper is professor of war studies at Massey University and he is project manager of the Centenary History of New Zealand and the First World War, a multivolume study of New Zealand’s role in the conflict. His research led to the book ‘‘Johnny Enzed: The New Zealand Soldier in the First World War 19141918’’ which was recently published. He received a Queen’s Service Medal in 2012.

Kaiapoi remembers By DAVID HILL Kaiapoi has remembered 10 New Zealand nurses who lost their lives during World War 1. The Kaiapoi RSA placed 10 white crosses next to the Kaiapoi Cenotaph on Friday to remember the nurses who were killed during the sinking of the Marquette troop ship on October 23, 1915. Kaiapoi RSA president Neill Price says there was one local nurse onboard the Marquette, Mary Louise Christmas, of Ohoka, who survived the sinking. Sister Christmas served in the 21st general hospital in Alexandria and received the Associate Royal Red Cross medal for her efforts.
She later returned to Canterbury after the war and worked at Christchurch Hospital training nursing students. Christmas Road at Ohoka was named after her grandfather. The troop ship Marquette was torpedoed by a submarine in the Agean Sea with 32 New Zealanders drowning. But it was the killing of the nurses which received the most attention around the world. Several of the 10 nurses had been trained at Christchurch Hospital which led to the Nurses Memorial Chapel being built and opening in 1927. The chapel was severely damaged in the Canterbury earthquakes, but funds are being raised to restore it.

Open day at Tu ¯ haitara Coastal Park An open day will be held at the Tuhaitara Coastal Park at Woodend Beach on Sunday, November 8, from 11am to 2pm.

The day is being organised by the Tuhaitara Trust and the Department of Conservation will be joining them and many other groups and organisations to celebrate the biodiversity and recreational opportunities that the park has to offer. There will be a range of activities around the 575 ha of land along the coastline from the Waimakariri River mouth to the township of Waikuku. The park stretches along the coast for 10.5 kilometres and has a network of biking and walking tracks, including a 1.5
km track leading to the tranquil Tutaepatu Lagoon with a bird watching platform. There will be a range of activities, displays and information around the Trust’s visitor centre and a fun beach carnival atmosphere with a live band, a performance by a local kapa haka group and refreshments around the Woodend domain. Outdoor treasure hunt Geocaching is an international phenomenon and people wanting to try their hand at it can do so during Conservation Week. The Department of Conservation (DOC) is running a national event from October 20 to November 11 for families to find caches and go into a draw to win some impressive prizes sponsored by Air New Zealand and Macpac. Caching is an outdoor adventure where players use a free mobile app to find cleverly hidden containers (‘caches’). It has been described as a
realworld outdoor treasure hunt using GPS coordinates. DOC has worked with the Christchurch City Council and Visit Waimakariri to showcase a wealth of native gems not just on public conservation land but also around Rangiora and Christchurch. There are a total of 13 caches to be found, along with another 10 at Arthur’s Pass National Park. Full details on how geocaching works and the completion are on www.conservationweek.org.nz.

Mahinga Kai planting A Mahinga Kai Exemplar planting day will be held on Sunday, 8 November from 10.30am to 1.30pm. The day is led by the Department of Conservation (DOC) and is part of the Mahinga Kai Exemplar, a project coled by Ngai Tahu and the AvonOtakaro Network (AvON) with partnership support from DOC, the Christchurch City Council, Environment Canterbury and the University of Canterbury. The Mahinga Kai Exemplar is creating opportunities for communities to learn about the importance of mahinga kai values and sustainability in today’s fastpaced world, and the inter
connections between land and water. It is hoped that the lessons learnt in the Exemplar will provide a basis for restoration and enhancement along the entire river red zone and beyond, to bring more birds and fish back into our environment. Mahinga kai, means to ‘work the food’ and refers to the lore and practices of Ngai Tahu in relation to the natural environment and the sustainable harvesting of resources. At the first planting day, in June 2014, 400 plants were planted with a further 3000 added since. On November 8, a further 700 will be planted.

New di direction i ffor popullar music i store The long-established Christchurch music store, Begg’s Music, is heading in an exciting new direction. As from the end of October, the store will be doing business from its new premises in Sydenham – operating as an outlet store. “The main reason for the move is that we need more space,” says Grant Bargrove, who has owned and run the popular music store for almost 30 years. One of the city’s oldest and most respected businesses, Begg’s dates back to the 1800s and since then has been providing instruments and other musical requirements for generations of keen musicians. The store moved into South City four years ago, after the earthquakes severely damaged the Colombo Street building it had occupied for the previous 25 years. The move to the new, larger premises this month allowing the change to the outlet concept, will mean much cheaper prices for customers, says Grant. Almost all the stock will be directly imported by Begg’s Music and displayed in an industrial environment, which will see examples of the various instruments on display and the bulk of the stock boxed up ready for customers to pick up and take home. With the larger premises providing more storage space, Begg’s Music will be getting back into pianos, says Grant. “We will be bringing them in directly by the container load. The interest in pianos has reignited, and we will have the space to showcase them, plus the building will be temperature controlled for the pianos.” Begg’s Music is also a supplier of Fender guitars, and will have an extensive range at the new outlet store, which also includes a fully equipped workshop. And with recording and live sound a growth area of the music industry, amplifiers are another key product for Begg’s Music, Grant says.
“We also hope to have live music on the premises from time to time.” Begg’s Music is very much a family concern, with Grant’s wife Cynthia responsible for the accounts and administration, and their three children, aged 12 to 19, and Grant’s parents all involved. Cynthia’s property management business also has its office in the new location. Begg’s Music Outlet Store is located at 53 Brisbane Street, on the corner of Brisbane and Wordsworth streets, with plenty of off-street parking. The South City store will close on October 18 and the new outlet store will open on October 31, and will operate from Tuesday to Saturday.

Fire risk high in dry conditions
Rural residents warned to take extra care this summer By DAVID HILL North Canterbury residents are being warned to be extra vigilant as the region enters another fire season. Waimakariri District Council principal fire officer Tim Sheppard says the fire season is ‘‘shaping up to be a good one’’ with restrictions likely to be imposed soon if conditions remain dry. ‘‘People often ask me what the fire season is going to be like and I generally say ‘a normal Canterbury summer’ which is unpredictable. So far we have already had a number of nor’westers and we have lingering drought.’’ Mr Sheppard says local fire fighters have responded to dozens of fires in the Waimakariri rural fire district in recent weeks due to the winds and he believes 90 per cent of those are due to re ignitions. ‘‘If you’ve had a fire check it to make sure it is out and don’t just look at it. Put your hand on it or a crowbar and if it comes out hot then it’s not out.’’ Checking weather forecasts is essential before lighting up, Mr Sheppard says. If northwesterly winds are forecast in the days after a burn off, these could re ignite the fire, so it is best to wait until conditions are damper. Sometimes fires can reignite weeks or event months later. Good season for rifle club The Hawarden Waikari Rifle Club wound up a successful 2015 season recently. The Mason Cup and Women’s Cup were won by Ashleigh Watson, of Medbury. Douglas Quigley came runner up in the Mason Plate and got the second highest average walking away with the Foster Cup. The Smellie Cup was awarded to Keith
Brown for the highest average and Tina Longman, of Hawarden, was the most improved. In the selfhandicap, Martin Quigley placed first, William Costello second and Corinna Berhorst third. Darryn and Katrina Quigley, who run the rifle club say they enjoyed the season and hope everyone will be back next year.

South Malvern’s James Ferris backed up his impressive batting display last week in premier country cricket with an incredible innings of 119 not out, off just 39 balls, this week. He brought up his century off 34 balls in South Malvern’s 10 wicket win over Oxford in the fourth round of the CRV Ambreed cricket competition. The blistering knock included 110 runs in boundaries made up of 14 fours and nine sixes. South Malvern chased down Oxford’s total of 145 in just 9.5 overs. Mike Pauling and Tom Rowlands were the pick of the South Malvern bowlers each picking up three wickets. Sefton continued its perfect start to the season with a comfortable seven wicket win over Lincoln. Lincoln batted first and made 164, being bowled out in the final over.

Ashley birds featured By SHELLEY TOPP The endangered birds of the Ashley Rakahuri River could not have a better champion than West Melton photographer Steve Attwood. His exhibition Rakahuri Manu Birds of the Ashley River, opened in the Rangiora Library’s Chamber Gallery, on Sunday, October 25. It features 32 photographs of the unique avian residents of the AshleyRakahuri River, from the inland braided river channels to the estuarine coast. The exhibition also tells the story of this special area in Waimakariri which has been rated a wetland of international significance by conservation authorities. Braided river environments are rare globally, and New Zealand, particularly the South Island, is considered an international hotspot for them. The Chamber Gallery exhibition is a welcome extension of Waimakariri Wow, a popular smaller display of Steve’s river bird images, installed in the Gables Arcade popup art gallery in Rangiora since August. The photographs at both exhibitions are a culmination of 4 years volunteer work for Steve, a labour of love, with many hours spent crawling around the river area to capture these stunning images which captivate and delight. The photographs represent a lifelong fascination with birds, developed during a childhood spent in Geraldine where Steve ‘‘grew up with braided rivers as my playground, fishing, kayaking and swimming.’’ Centre stage at this exhibition is a superb image of the unique little wrybill (ngutuparore), which is only found in New Zealand, and this year vied for Bird of the Year status. Bigger than a sparrow but smaller than a starling, the wrybill is also known as the

Final Proposal for Representation Arrangements for the 2016 Local Elections On 20 October 2015 the Waimakariri District Council considered the submissions received on its initial proposal regarding the representation arrangements for the Council and its constituent community boards to apply for the local elections to be held on 8 October 2016: The Council received 36 submissions on its proposal. Three submissions were in favour of the Council’s proposal. Thirty three submissions contained objections to various elements of the proposal, as follows: • Six submitters objected to the Oxford-Eyre Ward name • 23 submitters sought a community board for the Oxford-Eyre Ward • One submitter, supported by a petition, sought guaranteed representation through a subdivision for Oxford-Ohoka Ward • One submitter sought subdivision boundary adjustment, in the Kaiapoi-Woodend Ward reflecting community of interest including cultural reasons • 20 submitters considered that there should be only one community board in the Kaiapoi-Woodend Ward. Having considered all of the objections, the Council resolved to adopt its initial proposal as the Council’s final proposal, subject to the following amendments: • The Oxford-Eyre Ward be renamed as the Oxford-Ohoka Ward. • The Oxford-Ohoka Ward has a subdivision named Ohoka-Swannanoa for the area south of Earlys and Downs Roads encompassing of Ohoka, Mandeville, Swannanoa and a subdivision north of Earlys and Downs Roads encompassing West Eyreton, Oxford urban and surrounds. • The Oxford-Ohoka Ward to have one community board that is named Oxford-Ohoka Community Board consisting of three elected community board members apiece from the Ohoka-Swannanoa subdivision and Oxford subdivision of the OxfordOhoka Ward. • The Kaiapoi-Woodend Ward has one community board named Kaiapoi-Woodend Community Board comprising of three elected board members from the Woodend-Sefton subdivision and five elected board members from the Kaiapoi-Tuahiwi subdivision. • The subdivision boundary of Kaiapoi-Woodend Ward being west to east: Rangiora-Woodend Road, Main North Road (SH1), Fullers Road, Lees Road to the coast.
Community Board Representation It is proposed that three community boards be elected. The Rangiora-Ashley Community Board will be subdivided for electoral purposes as follows: Subdivision Area of Subdivision Rangiora Rangiora and Southbrook, The Council considers that: Ashley, Loburn, Okuku to the Garry River, Fernside, Cust and Mairaki Downs • the name change to Oxford-Ohoka Ward is appropriate for the reason of better reflecting the geographical spread of the ward.
